Denver teachers union overwhelmingly votes to accept compensation deal that ended strike

Members of the Denver teachers union voted overwhelmingly to ratify the tentative compensation agreement that ended the educators strike after three days earlier this month, the Denver Classroom Teachers Association announced Monday.

Members of the Denver teachers union voted overwhelmingly to ratify the tentative compensation agreement that ended the educators strike after three days earlier this month, the Denver Classroom Teachers Association announced Monday.

More than 97 percent of the union’s members voted in favor of the agreement that was reached Feb. 14 after an all-night bargaining session in the downtown Denver library basement, the union said.

“This agreement secures fair, predictable base pay for Denver educators and will go a long way to eliminating pay fluctuations that have made it difficult for educators to plan a teaching career and a life in Denver,” said Henry Roman, president of the teachers union. “With competitive pay in place, the district has taken an important first step in reversing the worst teacher retention rate in the metro area and providing much-needed stability for student learning.”

The ratification vote is nearly the final step in the 15-month saga that saw Denver’s teachres’ trying to negotiate a new ProComp contract that lays out how and how much educators in the largest district in the state get paid.

The Denver Board of Education still must vote to ratify the agreement before it takes effect.

The deal, which provides an average 11.7 percent raise next year for teachers and special service providers like school nurses and psychologists, was reached on the dawn of what would have been the fourth day of the teacher strike.
