A Week of Themes

Well, I love few things more than capes and wool cape season is almost upon us. Hurrah!

Breaking out the tall boots an short skirts. It must be fall up here.

I know, I haven't worn tis dress in a while and I've been so inspired lately to wear it again, new coats, boots and cardigans are really helping!

Hmm, just being witchy.

These three outfits were for a theme on reddit's FFA - the theme was dance inspired! I'm disappointed I didn't have enough time to do a good Lord of the Dance look (because that's one of my all time favorites) I did two ballet themed looked, both loosely based off the Black Swan in Swan Lake and one tap practice inspired look. I did tap years ago and it was so fun - I had red high heeled tap shoes so I knew I had to do this look.

This was another challenge, this time for the #darkcovenstyle on instagram -the theme was autumn pumpkin harvest. I reworked my branch crown from a while ago and while I'm not sure I nailed the theme, I did love the look.

Rolling Into Fall

This outfit is for a maximalist challenge. .  I finally found a shag coat I really loved and have been waiting for the temps to drop low enough I could wear it without heat stroke.  It was 34f this morning so yay, perfect timing! I wore this awesome gauzy dress with a printed sweater on top, put on a beaded belt that I felt worked with the prints and the jewelry, wore my embroidered mules and threw on the shag jacket. The temps did rise and then fall during the day so at on point I wore this without the sweater and went with a plain leather jacket, tried my All Saints coat with it, tried my velvet robe and wore just the sweater over the top. There is a lot going on it the outfit so I tried to keep the colors of the prints similar - lots of reds, blues and black - and tried to keep a similar scale for all of the patterns.  I really enjoyed this outfit and the few versions of it.

I had a hard time with the light here, the sun was setting but it was such a cool looking ball of fire and I just did not capture it. Ugh.  This is the Free People French Courtship dress again with a velvet robe. The Courtship dress shows up often on ebay and poshmark for the $30-60 range and I found mine for $20.  It is a beautiful dress that I've gotten a lot of wear out of over the years and I feel like it is very easy to style! I am 5'2 so it looks quite a bit longer on me than most of the other people wearing it around the internet.

Another day, another Free People Lace dress. (I just really like them.) This is the first time I've worn this one without any layering and I'm really happy with how it looked! I had some cool eye makeup on that I tried to capture but no dice.

This is a very plain look for running around but I liked how the sweater and the boots with the socks worked.

The boots, sock and sweater again but with a dress! I kind of like this and kind of don't.  I think it would be cuter with a different sweater or jacket or maybe different boots.

Styling the plaid maxi again, this time I went with a slightly Victorian influenced blouse and some suede ankle boots and I love how it came together.  The suede jacket helped dress it down a bit and I liked how all of the textures came together in this look.

The dress from today, again! I wore it just with the Monument coat and some tall boots and I loved it. The only thing that threw me off was the belt, I thought the lower slung style would work but it really didn't with the flow of the dress. I think if I punch another hole in the belt and wear it higher it will be fine but I did like the flow of this outfit.

Technical Problems I Guess

I'm sorry, I am having the worst time with blogger today! I've lost this post twice and it finally updated a stripped down version. Sorry!

I'd been wanting a plaid skirt so badly and then I remember this one that has been stuck in my mend basket - it has the perfect amount of swish and works with several different style genres.

It is getting old enough for my taller boots and I am so excited, I feel like my fall and winter style is quite a bit better than my summer style.  I got this hood scarf a little while back and it is fun to have an alternative to my hats.

This was such a fun outfit and I tried to go a little more extra with my makeup here.

Ok, this dress looks a 100% better with this belt!  I do need to put another hole in the belt so I can wear it at my actual waist but I like it with tighter dresses and over coats, like the outfit above.

Colder Weather Up North

Whoa, two posts in one week?  This outfit is one of my favorites, I've been really happy with how this coat "completes" an outfit, it is a perfect layering piece and adds lots of visual interest to an outfit.

I just got these pants after wanting a pairing of printed bellbottoms and while it is an okay first styling attempt, I think I can put together better looks.  I am super excited about them however!

Oooh, more pants!  These pants are so big but don't feel overwhelming because of how flowy they are. They're almost more of a maxi skirt than pants and I think that makes it easier to style them.  I liked the print mixing here and the big cashmere cardigan is so soft and adds some texture.

I've shown this shirt before but always worn backwards and open! (It buttons up the back and I like how it looks as a loose jacket.) The print is striking and I liked how the whole look cam together.

This was an experiment more than anything.  I've struggled with styling this Vivienne Westwood coat for years and it suddenly occurred to me that I've always worn it with a plain top. I found my ruffled top and then the plaid pant and somehow I ended up at evil sheriff cosplay. Huh.  Either way, it was a fun look and now I have some ideas for this coat - I feel like I can polish this look up and do something awesome with it.

Hmm, I'm not crazy about this. The sleeves are fun but I need to wear a bigger coat with them because they bunch up so badly. The pants also wrinkle badly and I don't care for how that looks.

Another look I am not crazy about, the tee make this look kind of disheveled and not very put together.  But below I tried a similar look with a collared shirt and a similar colored maxi ( with more structure in everything) and I like it so much more!

I pulled out my big All Saints coat from the coat box because it has rained so much lately and been colder in the morning and also because I have been planning outfits around it all summer. Go coat!

Taking Inspiration

Alright, this one I felt deserved it's own stand alone post.  I made this crown and I feel pretty awesome about that. I've been trying to find a "dark" floral crown since I've really enjoyed wearing the little fun ones but I didn't have any luck finding something I liked. I ended up going to Michaels and bought a black branch, two springs of dark leaves and berries, three black roses, a few tiny dark red flowers. I twisted the branch in a circle and rather than use wire to keep it together, I wrapped the leaf springs around it.  They had a stiff wire in the middle so it worked very well and looked intentional.  The downside is that the crown is really large and doesn't fit in the car and the horse is scared of it so my transportation options are limited while wearing it!

This is the strapless Rick Owens maxi I wear often but this time I wrapped it up in the belt so the skirt was more twisted. It actually stayed up all day so it was a practical modification.
Dark forest queens probably don't carry purses but I need my cards and id so I used my little star bag to keep up the whimsy.  The whole look is inspired by Alphonse Mucha  season illustration sets and Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth - I felt the lines and flow of both the crown and the cape were very reminiscent of Mucha's style  and del Toro always puts such an amazing dark fairytale vibe into his movies.

This is a close up of the crown, I really liked how the shape came together. It is heavy but balanced well so it really stays on my head with no effort.
For a more wearable aspect I also wore the cape as a shawl/scarf.

Falling Into Fall (In Alaska At Least)

Our weather has been all over the place lately so I've been able to layer quite a bit. (I know, the weather is everyone's favorite subject.)  It was just cold enough to break out a wool cardigan, I choose this one because the draping and ruffles felt like they worked well with the similar drape of the dress. One of our librarians told me I looked like either a green witch or a wood fairy and I am down with that.

Well, those stupid light leaks are hard to get away from with the sun but I was too lazy to keep trying to take photos.  I just wore all of the black drapey and leather stuff on this day and while I feel like the grey tank wasn't the best choice for this, I did have fun swishing around in the long cardigan.  It is also always fun to break out the blue lipstick! I would wear it more often but I seam to get blue (specifically only the blue) lipstick all over my face so....it's not an every day thing, even though I love it.

I'm a little on the fence with this. I liked the belt in the mirror but looking at the photos I feel like it was a step too far.

Sorry for the close up but I liked my green eyeshadow. However, I am awful at taking photos of my make up and have not idea how those beauty bloggers take such fantastic closeup shots.  I need to work on it I suppose.  This was just the Frame black jeans again with a Levi jacket and the awesome rose Doc Marten Vondas.

See, I can do normal.  Maybe.  This is about as close as I can get and it does feel like a tame look but I wish I had worn a hat to really compete the look.

K.Dotty at Woven Mornings was talking about a white cape yesterday and I remember my own white cape - this is the one from last fall that I found at the thrift store after stalking it on ebay. It is a Ralph Lauren Collection cashmere cape and it is so fancy I has to roll into a dark elf (but in white!) inspired outfit.  The dress is a Free People one I found at our consignment store (and I realized my lace band had slipped down and you can see my bra but whatevers, life happen.  And next time I'll pay more attention, ugh.

It was a cold and misty more so I went with some adventurer vibes. I had to lose the coat and the cape a few hours into the morning because it heated up quickly but hey, at five in the morning a cape is very cozy.

Ok, blue jeans are my nemesis and I've complained about them before. I have trouble styling in a way that feels interesting and looks cohesive so I tried to go with a visually interesting look with the star embroidered sheer top, the Vonda Doc Martens and a flower crown.  I'm not sure, I'm kind of meh, kind of ok with it.  It's a good look for "blending in" I suppose.  (But dude, I am totally open to critique, if you have any styling ideas lay them on me!)

Mmm, another kibnd of like outfit but I think the vest AND the shirt are too soft together and I need more structure in there somewhere.  I feel like it is an okay look but it need work and can be better.  It was too hot for a coat so that would have been an easy way to make the styling more interesting - I struggle with hot summers and trying to figure out how to make simple looks work.

This is my super old American eagle jacket that won't die and I still love it.  This was an easy outfit with the buckle boots, a flowy lace dress (this is the Free People French Courtship dress and it comes in so many colors and can be found on ebay for cheap - sizing is a little on the larger size and is generous.)  and I added a headband, the sash from my star maxi and the embroidered bag for some texture mixing and visual interest.

My mom gave me this hat for my birthday and I love it.  It is pretty different from all of my other hats and it blocks the sun so well AND it looks very intentional with just a [[lain silk maxi.

Some Dark Style in The Smoke Again

I loved this - I had gotten the hair band from Icings last year and just started playing around with using hair accessories rather than hats and I enjoyed how this worked out. I wish I had gotten a better shot of my eye look because I quite liked the purple to blue shift of the shadow but I am pretty awful at decent eye shots.  New thing to work on I suppose!

This is an older cardigan that I pulled out and a slightly colder day and I like how the length and volume brought a lot of drama to otherwise "just a dress" kind of outfit. I tried the hair band again but did a poor job of making a bun and my bangs just did not want to cooperate.

My mom gave me the Vonda 1640 Doc Martens for my birthday and I love them so much! They had sold out in town almost instantly around Christmas last year and I was so bummed - this was the best present! They also are way more comfortable than my patent leather 1640 docs - those have taken years to really break in but this pair was comfortable right off the bat. (Actually, the patent leather 1640s are the only docs that have killed my feet, every other pair has broken in within a few years.)  The tiger cardigan is a dope Free People one I found at the Meg and Me consignment store in Tacoma last winter when I was visiting my brother and sister in law. I wore it a bit last winter and then with a few of the colder days have been wearing it more.

This is a beautiful silk Taloni dress from our local consignment store The Vintage Junky that I found a while back. I had to do a few alterations to make it work but it was worth it in this case. Most of the time unless I know I will do an alteration I won't buy something but in this case, I really loved the pattern and the silk and the alterations were some I could do quickly. I wore it with some fun yellow bow sandals from last summer and my vintage tooled leather bag.  It's going to be easy to winterized with some heavy cardigans and my lace up boots this winter.

The star maxi strikes again!  This is a Red Valentino dress I found on ebay for super cheap because it has a small repair ( almost invisible, I had to search for it!) and I guess the owner felt that really took the value down.  I wore it this time with the yellow bow sandals again - I've really been enjoying my boots this year and haven't felt like wearing sandals but I suppose I should before winter strikes!  I tried to wrap a scarf but but again, my bun kept falling out and it wasn't super great looking by the time I took these shots.

Alaska / A Smokey Week of Dark Style

A Smokey Week of Dark Style

Another week of smoky photos!  Alaska is experiencing an unusual heat wave and although the Interior of Alaska does normally get up to and past 90F in the summer, that normally means a very fiery and smoky summer.   The heat has been a little on and off but the smoke has been pretty miserable.  That said, this week I felt my looks were more cohesive and I feel pretty good about them.  This is the fancy star dress again - this time I wore the cosmic boots with it and between those, the star print and the silk cape, I love the black and gold color scheme.

This is a pair of Frame pants I thrifted a while back. I like the fit and the crop flair but they wrinkle like crazy as you can see.  I also did an awful tuck job that was not helped by my tank being too thick for it, it ended up looking very lumpy.  The top is a silk Anna Sui for INC that I thrifted and is very lightweight so perfect for the heat.

The temps were all over the place this day so I wore a jacket sometimes. I loved this way of styling the big pants from the last post, the crop top felt like a good proportion and the bag followed the color scheme well.  I also wore a lot of necklaces, I am defiantly not a "take one off before you leave the house" kind of person!

This is one of my very favorite outfits.  The top is actually a Zara dress, the print is so fun and adds a good folklore vibe to an outfit, especially with the belt.  The robe is actually a Rick Owens wrap maxi that I just wore loose, I love the slightly villainous air it lent to the look.

I loved this as well!  This is the forever21 maxi from a while back and one I found at our local consignment store last summer.  For a F21 item, the lace is surprisingly sturdy and I know because I get stuck in this thing every single time and have to go through some serious gymnastics to get it off and it still hasn't ripped or torn! (I don't know why, it think it is just because the bust is very fitted and I am too lazy to undo the tiny little buttons on the side every time.  I am a bad role model.)  Pork returned to her photobombing ways but she's such a doll I don't care.

The bugs were bitting so much I only got two subpar pictures out of this.  I wish I had some cunning antidote about Alaskan mosquitoes but the truth is they bit really hard and there's a lot. (I ended up with huge welts from them this time, ugh. My perfume de la Bug Dope did not work very well.)

The fancy boots again!  I didn't wear these very much last winter, of course, so now I need to wear them in the summer. I make no sense at all.  I wore a bunch of draped, wrapped stuff in this outfit and it was fun.

Oh man, I found this All Saints jacket on ebay last winter for $11. That's right, $11.  Boom!  The down side is that the sleeves are very fitted and I cannot wear a sweater under it and my sleeves bunched up too much for the lines to be smooth. Otherwise, an A+ look I felt, I loved how the top and the skirt had a Victorian influence but didn't feel very literal.

Lighter Summer Style

Summer cape in a slightly lighter look, I like it with the richer colors of this Target dress I found at the thrift store. (The empire cut I not the most flattering but I like to try different silhouettes out.)

Wearing the crop pants from the spring #30x30 in a more summery look. I think this would have been cute with a pair of clogs or boots but I was lazy and went for birks.

A silk robe, a winter kate top and shorts because it was hot again. I'm trying to work on styling shorts in a manner that doesn't read "shorts, a top and sandals" but more of an actual LOOK.  This doesn't quite make it but I think that might be due to the footwear choice here.

The Target maxi with a fringe cape and heavy boots - I loved this even though it looks a little off balanced in photos.

I went to a country music concert and I love the chance for some good cosplay er dress up opportunities.  I threw his together at the last moment but to be honest, I think I should have gone with my lace Free People French courtship dress and the Ariat boots instead, that would have been super country and I would have liked the proportions more.  That said, while I don't like the knee length proportion wise on me, it was perfect for dancing and we did a ton of that!  (It was the Joe Nichols concert - I was a barn manger for the 00's and while I did play Disturbed in the mornings, I had to play something more "family friendly" when students were there and there was a lot of Joe Nichols on the radio at that time. It was a fun blast from the past and I always like a concert where I can sing all of the songs.)

Trying short outfits again but this was very lazy, I didn't even put on makeup this day.

Shorts again, this is getting closer to an actual look.  I might have it figured out by January at this rate.

These are the pants from a few posts ago - I like the long version but I'm short and I just felt like SO much fabric. I cropped them to this length and I feel like I will get way more use out of them now!  The length works better for my height and with my shoes.

Too many pictures but this was a rare outfit where everything came together.

A Dash of Dark Summer Style

Time for the summer cape to make a return!  By dark summer style I suppose I mean mostly in colors as the styles from this week had quite a range of aesthetics!   This is more along the lines of dark romance with the Rick Owens dress and wedges and then the Winter Kate silk cape with all of the embroidery and fringe.

This is the white linen dress from last summer - I decided I wouldn't wear it that much with it being white so I dumped it in a bucket of RiteAid and turned it this molten gray.  I quite like it now with the darker color.  I wore it with the vest and some lace up sandals that like to fall down all of the time.

I started out with wanting to wear an outfit inspired by Tony Jaa's wardrobe from The Protector and ended up with this, which isn't even close. (Maybe with the scarf, I like how his scarves were twisted and wrapped in the movie and I tried it with this longer, thin scarf I have but again, not really even close.) Outfit inspo failure aside, I loved this look.

I've been trying some different pant silhoutes aside from skinny pants and this are just the best.

Just wearing a Rick Owens draped dress an a Rebecca Minkoff bag I found at VV for under $6. I know these bags are past their popularity but I like the shape and the snap and this one is a cool seafoam green.

Wearing a literal animal print today - this is a Joie top from 2013 and has zebras, tigers and all kinds of animals on it.  I tied it over an older F21 I thrifted a while back and some birks.   It was really hot and I didn't want to wear all black so this was a nice, floaty option that still had visual interest going on but felt a little more in line with the dark summer look.

I loved this outfit and took awful pictures, there was no shade anywhere.  It is just a draped top and a maxi but I liked the little touches of the big earrings with belt and then the  drape on the top and skirt.

Like I'm on Lookbook in 2011 guys.  Haha, I haven't worn my red docs in a while and I found a pair of ripped black jeans I actually like at the thrift store so the whole look came together. I liked how the fringed vest and the bag brought in the western touches I like while the drape of the top pulled in the darker vibes. I usually keep my styles separated within their genres but I like a little blending as well.

Another Week of Summer

Another week of outfit posts! You'll have to forgive me, this set is mostly thanks to the goofy faces Sarge makes.  He is such a silly boy and then Dakota and a kid had to photobomb and be all cute.

 Wink!
 Looking in totally different directions.....
 Now he's laughing at me...

This is the jumpsuit again but with a tank top over it. I love all of the volume and it was very cooling to wear on a hot day. I wish I had gotten better photos but I took these right before heading to be. (I love it when it is so light so late at night!)

My very old Anthropologie jumpsuit returns, this time with a robe for some pattern mixing and birks.  I liked how the colors of the two patterns were very similar, I felt it made them work and it was a fun look.

A vest, a crop top and a RO skirt because why not.  It was really hot again so the crop top felt pretty nice!

A crop top with some big pants this time!  I'm not crazy about the flatforms with the big pants, it fells a bit heavy at the bottom visually so I think next time I will wear boots or clogs or something.

My old Free People dress, this time with a robe!  I have to say, I really hate this shoe choice.  I never like these shoes in an outfit despite them on paper being very "me" so I think it may be time to pass them along.  I think this would have been cuter with boots, clogs or sandals but not these shoes.

Ok, on to an outfit I did like!  I wore my old thrifted clogs with this cotton dress and really liked it with the wrap worn as a scarf.

I shamelessly copied this from an instagram user ( frisky_gatos) and loved it.  This is an old Joie dress with my cowboy Acne boots and it was just super fun to wear. Ha, I just realized I've ben using this Besty Johnson bag non stop lately -I love the embroidered strap, there's plenty of room in te bag and I have a lot of fondness for the brand.

I apparently have my "dark and brooding" days where I wear all of the Rick Owens and the blue lipstick.  I loved this and had fun wearing it, enough said.

A slightly lighter note with my old All Saints dress, a winter kate robe and a straw hat that I felt complimented the lines of the dress.

And both the robe and the cotton dress are back for this outfit.  I've really enjoyed layering this robe, it seems like it works well with other patterns, is light enough not to be too warm and adds lots of visual interest and layering to a summer look.
